Lake Hindmarsh is the largest freshwater lake in Victoria, Australia. It covers an area of 29,652 acres (12,000 hectares) in western Victoria. It has a shoreline of over 40 miles (64 kilometers), but it has a fluctuating water surface because it dries up in dry years and becomes an area of salt-encrusted flats. Lake Hindmarsh is a popular recreation area for fishing, water sports, and bird watching.
Aboriginal people have occupied the Lake Hindmarsh region for thousands of years. British explorer Edmund John Eyre discovered Lake Hindmarsh in 1838. He named the lake after Sir John Hindmarsh , the first governor of South Australia.
