Larache (pop. 125,008) is a seaport on the northern Atlantic coast of Morocco. The city is an important fishing and agricultural center. Larache was founded in the 800’s. Portugal occupied the city briefly during the 1400’s. Spain ruled Larache during the 1600’s. The city was taken by the Moroccan sultan in 1689. Larache was under Spanish control from 1912 until Morocco became independent in 1956.
