Lundy Island is an island in the Bristol Channel off the north coast of Devon in southwestern England. The island lies about 24 miles (39 kilometers) west of Ilfracombe and 12 miles (19 kilometers) north of Hartland Point. It is about 3 miles (4.8 kilometers) long and 1/2 mile (0.8 kilometer) wide. Lundy Island is a bird observatory controlled by the British Trust for Ornithology. Many puffins breed on the island. The island’s name comes from the Norse wordlunde, meaning puffin. The remains of Marisco Castle stand on the island.
In 2010, the waters around Lundy Island became England’s first Marine Conservation Zone, a protected ocean environment. Gray seals, lobsters, pink sea fan corals, and basking sharks populate the waters. See also Conservation (Ocean conservation) ; Devon ; Puffin .
