Luton (pop. 225,262) is a unitary authority (local government area) in England. It is situated about 30 miles (48 kilometers) north of London. Luton is a well-known center of automobile manufacturing. Other local industries produce ball bearings, electrical goods, and scientific instruments. A hatmaking trade, started about 100 years ago, still thrives in Luton. Luton has a large church, St. Mary’s, built in the Perpendicular Gothic style. To the east is Luton Airport.
