Manaus is a major inland city of Brazil, and the capital of the state of Amazonas. The municipality of Manaus has a population of 1,802,014. A municipality may include rural areas as well as the urban center. Manaus lies on the Negro River, about 10 miles (16 kilometers) from the junction of the Negro and Amazon rivers. It is about 1,000 miles (1,600 kilometers) from the mouth of the Amazon, but can be reached by ocean liners. It is the trading center for the area around the Amazon Basin. It trades in products of the Amazon forests, including hardwoods, Brazil nuts, and rubber.
