Mangelwurzel

Mangelwurzel is a variety of beet closely related to sugar beets and red beets. It is sometimes called mangold or field beet. It is widely grown in Europe and Canada.

Mangelwurzels have large, swollen, yellowish roots, which are used as cattle food. Mangelwurzels were not widely grown until the early 1800’s. They replaced turnips as a winter cattle food. Mangelwurzels are very resistant to drought.
