Markievicz, Countess

Markievicz, Countess (1868-1927), was an Irishwoman who played an important part in her country’s struggle for independence from the United Kingdom. She took an active part in the Easter Rising of 1916. She was sentenced to death but was later reprieved. She was the first woman to be elected to the British House of Commons, but she did not take her seat in the House. In 1919, she became minister of labor in the Dáil Éireann (Irish House of Representatives). She was born on Feb. 4, 1868, in Lissadell, in County Sligo. Her given and family name was Constance Georgine Gore-Booth. She married Polish Count Dunin-Markievicz in 1900. She died on July 15, 1927.
