Mitchell grass is a valuable Australian fodder grass named after the Scottish-born explorer Sir Thomas Mitchell. It grows in the inland and western parts of Australia. In Queensland and northern New South Wales, the grasslands consist almost entirely of the two dominant species (kinds) of Mitchell grass–common and wheat-eared. These grasses die down in winter. Even a small shower in summer will cause them to sprout.
