Montrose, Marquess of (1612-1650), James Graham Montrose, was a leading Scottish supporter of the Royalist cause during the English Civil War of the 1640’s. In 1644, his force of Irishmen and Highlanders won the Battle of Tippermuir, captured Aberdeen, and won the Battle of Inverlochy. His victory at Kilsyth in 1645 gave him control of much of Scotland, but he was defeated at the Battle of Philiphaugh in the same year.
Montrose left Scotland for Norway in 1646. He tried to raise the Highlands for Prince Charles in 1650. He was defeated at the Battle of Invercarron and was executed in Edinburgh on May 21, 1650.
