Mount Apo is the highest peak in the Philippines. It rises to a height of 9,692 feet (2,954 meters) above sea level. It lies in central Mindanao, on the boundary between the Davao and Soccsksargen regions. Scientists classify Mount Apo as a semiactive volcano. Lava and ash from previous eruptions have made the soil of the region extremely fertile. The soil is particularly suitable for growing coconuts and abacá (a plant used to make Manila hemp). Mount Apo has been turned into a national park to protect its forestry and wildlife. The park is a popular tourist attraction. Mount Apo is also popular with local mountaineers.
