Paperbark is a large Australasian tree that has loose bark that looks like paper hanging from its trunk and branches. There are several species. Paperbarks generally grow in moist areas such as along riverbanks and in swamps. The leaves of many species yield oils that have antiseptic properties and have a camphorlike smell. Two kinds of paperbarks grow both in Australia and in similar situations in Papua New Guinea.
