Ryle, Gilbert

Ryle, Gilbert (1900-1976), a British philosopher, achieved distinction with his book The Concept of Mind (1949). In this and other works, he argued that many philosophical dilemmas and absurd theories arise from misinterpretations of linguistic idiom. In particular, he applied this idea to theories about the relationship of mind and body. Ryle was born in Brighton (now Brighton and Hove), England. He was Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy at Oxford from 1945 to 1968. In 1947, he became editor of the philosophical journal Mind.
