Siena

Siena (pop. 53,724) lies in the hills of Tuscany near Florence, Italy. Its central square, the Piazza del Campo, is internationally famous. The city hall overlooks it. Horses sponsored by districts in the city run races known as the Palio in this square each year. Siena’s Gothic cathedral is made of black and white marble, and is one of Europe’s most famous medieval cathedrals. Siena has a university that dates from the 1200’s. The city was the home of Saint Catherine, the patron saint of Italy.
