Tarantino, Quentin

Tarantino, Quentin (1963-…), is an American motion-picture director and screenwriter. He gained an international reputation for his violent and highly personal films. Tarantino’s work reflects his love of old Hollywood movies and popular culture and his fascination with violence.

Quentin Jerome Tarantino was born on Sept. 27, 1963, in Knoxville, Tennessee. He earned immediate attention with his first film as a director, Reservoir Dogs (1992). The film is an intense and violent drama about a failed robbery. Tarantino wrote the screenplay and acted in the film. He became an international celebrity with Pulp Fiction (1994), a gangster movie that won the top prize at the Cannes Festival in France. Tarantino won an Academy Award for writing the best original screenplay for the film. He also won an Academy Award for writing the best original screenplay for the Western Django Unchained (2012), which he also directed.

Tarantino wrote the original story for Natural Born Killers (1994). He wrote and directed Jackie Brown (1997), a film about an assortment of greedy characters involved in drug running. Tarantino also wrote and directed the martial arts movies Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004). He acted in the films Sleep with Me (1994) and Desperado (1995). He served as co-writer, actor, and co-executive producer for the horror film From Dusk Till Dawn (1996). He also co-wrote, co-directed, and appeared in Death Proof, one of two films comprising the action/horror “double-feature” Grindhouse (2007). Tarantino also appeared in the other Grindhouse film, Planet Terror, directed by Robert Rodriguez. Other films written and directed by Tarantino include Inglourious Basterds (2009), The Hateful Eight (2015), and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood (2019).
