Tiger snake

Tiger snake is a group of venomous snakes found in southern Australia. They range in color from gray or brown to olive-green or black. The common name refers to prominent yellow and black cross-bands on the back of some tiger snakes. However, not all tiger snakes have these bands. The snakes are known to be aggressive and their venom can kill human beings.

Tiger snakes can grow to about 7 feet (2 meters) long. But most reach less than 5 feet (1.5 meters). They are found in watery environments around creeks, lagoons, wetlands and swamps. They can also occur in grasslands where there is sufficient water and cover. Tiger snakes often shelter around fallen timber, in matted vegetation, or in abandoned animal burrows. Tiger snakes eat birds, fish, frogs, and small mammals. They usually hunt during the daytime. Their predators include goshawks, harriers, kites, and kookaburras. Many are also killed by vehicles while basking on roadways.
