Tourneur, Cyril (1575?-1626), was an English dramatist. Some scholars believe that Tourneur wrote The Revenger’s Tragedy (1607), though many others attribute the play to Thomas Middleton. Many critics consider this play to be one of the most powerful Elizabethan tragedies outside the work of Shakespeare. It is remarkable for its gloomy intensity and complex beauty of imagery, and for the sweep and rapidity of the plot’s development. Tourneur wrote The Atheist’s Tragedy (1611). Little is known of his life.
