Tynedale

Tynedale is a local government area in Northumberland Unitary Authority (local government area), in northeastern England, on the border with Scotland. Northumberland has a population of 320,567. Tynedale, covering an area of 857 square miles (2,220 square kilometers), is one of the largest districts in England.

Tynedale is mainly rural and has some of the most beautiful scenery in the United Kingdom. Tourism is a vital industry in Tynedale. Important historic sites include Hadrian’s Wall and the Roman fort of Vindolanda. Several museums display Roman artifacts. Farmers grow crops in the valley areas and raise sheep and cattle in the hills. The chief industries include light engineering, printing, and the manufacture of aluminum components, chipboard, deicing fluid, furniture, paints, and plastics. Fluorite, a mineral used for hardening steel, and coal are mined locally.
