Wedge-tailed eagle is one of the largest eagles in the world. It is a large, blackish-brown bird with a long, wedge-shaped tail. The wedge-tailed eagle lives in all parts of Australia, including Tasmania. It also can be found in southern areas of New Guinea.
Wedge-tailed eagles grow as long as 36 to 40 inches (90 to 100 centimeters). Their wingspan is 7 feet (2 meters). Females are larger than males. Wedge-tailed eagles have been known to reach heights of more than 6,500 feet (2,000 meters) while flying.
Wedge-tailed eagles are the largest birds of prey in Australia. They are carnivores (meat-eaters). They eat hares, rabbits, wallabies, and dead animals. Farmers say they kill sheep.
A female wedge-tailed eagle lays one or two eggs on a platform of sticks high in a tree. The young eagles are reddish in color. Both parents feed their offspring for months, until the young birds become independent.
