Whitehall

Whitehall is a street in Westminster, in London. The buildings in Whitehall are the traditional headquarters of the United Kingdom’s civil service, which helps to administer government departments. Many people use the name Whitehall to mean the civil service itself, rather than the street. Others use it to refer to the street and the surrounding area. The Houses of Parliament stand at the southern end of the street. Downing Street, which includes the prime minister’s official residence, is off Whitehall. The Cenotaph, a monument honoring the dead of both world wars, stands in Whitehall.
