Wookey Hole

Wookey Hole, in Somerset, England, is a series of limestone caverns in the Mendip Hills near Cheddar. The largest cave in the complex, the Great Cave, was inhabited by Iron Age Celts between about 250 B.C. and A.D. 400. In another cave, the Hyena’s Den, archaeologists found human and animal remains that are 50,000 years old. The First Chamber, or Witch’s Kitchen, contains a rounded stalagmite resembling a woman’s figure. The River Axe flows through the caves. Visitors to Wookey Hole can also see a nearby Victorian paper mill where paper is still made by hand, a collection of fairground equipment, and the storeroom of Madame Tussaud’s Waxworks Museum.
