Gonne, Maud

Gonne, Maud (1866-1953), was an Irish nationalist who also won fame for her association with the poet William Butler Yeats, in one of whose plays she acted. Gonne was born in Aldershot, in Hampshire, England. She went to Ireland in 1882. She became interested in Irish nationalism. In 1900, she founded a revolutionary society, Inghinidhe na hEireann (Daughters of Ireland). Gonne supported the Republican cause in the wars of 1921-1922. She aided war victims and organized the Women’s Prisoners Defence League. In 1938, she published an autobiography, Servant of the Queen.
