Allard, A. Wayne (1943-…), served as a member of the United States Senate from 1997 to 2009. Allard, a Republican, represented Colorado. As a senator, Allard was a supporter of legislation that shifted responsibilities from the federal government to the state governments. He also supported laws that favored businesses. He sided with conservatives on such social issues as gay rights and abortion.
Alan Wayne Allard was born on Dec. 2, 1943, in Fort Collins, Colorado. He earned a degree in veterinary medicine from Colorado State University in 1968. He then began working as a veterinarian and became director of the Allard Animal Hospital, which he sold in the early 1990’s. Allard was chief health officer of Loveland, Colorado, from 1970 to 1978. He served on the Larimer County Board of Health from 1978 to 1982.
In 1982, Allard was elected to the Colorado state Senate, and he served until 1990. In 1990, he won election to the U.S. House of Representatives. He remained a member of the House until 1997. In 1996, he ran for the U.S. Senate. He won election to his first term as a U.S. senator and took office in 1997. He won reelection in 2002. Allard did not seek a third Senate term in the 2008 congressional elections.
