Burns, Conrad Ray (1935-2016), was a United States senator from 1989 to 2007. Burns, a Republican, represented Montana.
Burns was born in Gallatin, Missouri, on Jan. 25, 1935, and graduated from Gallatin High School in 1952. He attended the University of Missouri at Columbia from 1952 to 1954. Burns served in the United States Marine Corps from 1955 to 1957. He later worked as a livestock auctioneer and as a radio and television broadcaster. He founded the Northern Ag-Network in 1975 and worked there until 1986.
In 1987 and 1988, Burns served as commissioner for Yellowstone County in Montana. He won his first election to the U.S. Senate in 1988 and took office in 1989. He was reelected in 1994 and 2000. In 2006, Burns narrowly lost a bid for reelection to Democrat Jon Tester. Burns died on April 28, 2016.
