Gregg, Judd Alan (1947-…), served in the United States Senate from 1993 to 2011. Gregg, a Republican, represented New Hampshire. He served as chairman of the Senate Budget Committee from 2005 to 2007.
In 2009, President Barack Obama nominated Gregg for secretary of commerce. Gregg withdrew, however, explaining that he had policy differences from the Democratic president. Soon afterward, Gregg announced he would not seek reelection in 2010.
After the 1995 bombing of a federal office building in Oklahoma, Senator Gregg proposed legislation allocating $300 million to fight terrorism. In 1996, the Senate approved an antiterrorism bill that resembled Gregg’s proposal, though it allowed less money.
Gregg was born in Nashua, New Hampshire, on Feb. 14, 1947. Gregg’s father, Hugh, served as New Hampshire’s governor from 1953 to 1955. Judd Gregg received a bachelor’s degree from Columbia University in 1969 and a law degree from Boston University in 1972. He worked as a lawyer in Nashua from 1972 to 1980.
In 1980, Gregg was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was reelected three times and served until 1989. In 1988, Gregg ran for governor of New Hampshire and won. He was reelected governor in 1990. In 1992, Gregg ran for the U.S. Senate and won election to his first Senate term. He took office in 1993.
