Hutchinson, Tim

Hutchinson, Tim (1949-…), a Republican from Arkansas, was a member of the United States Senate from 1997 to 2003. He was the first Republican ever to be elected to the Senate by the voters of Arkansas. From 1993 to 1997, Hutchinson had served in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he worked on legislation to reduce the federal deficit and to change the welfare system.

Hutchinson was born in Bentonville, Arkansas, on Aug. 11, 1949. His full name is Young Timothy Hutchinson. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Bob Jones University in 1972 and a master’s degree from the University of Arkansas in 1990.

From 1982 to 1989, Hutchinson was co-owner of radio station KBCV in Bentonville. He also taught at John Brown University.

Hutchinson served in the Arkansas state House of Representatives from 1985 to 1993. He was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1992 and reelected in 1994. Hutchinson won election to the Senate in 1996 and took office in 1997. In 2002, Hutchinson ran for a second Senate term but lost the election.
