Mack, Connie, III

Mack, Connie, III (1940-…), a Republican from Florida, was a member of the United States Senate from 1989 to 2001. He served as chair of the Joint Economic Committee. He also served on the Senate Finance Committee and the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee. Mack was considered one of the most conservative senators on social issues. For example, he strongly opposed government funds for abortion; lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) rights legislation; and gun control laws.

Mack was born in Philadelphia. His full name is Cornelius McGillicuddy III. His grandfather, also called Connie Mack, was owner-manager of the Philadelphia Athletics from 1901 to 1950 and is a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Connie Mack III received a bachelor’s degree in marketing from the University of Florida in 1966 and worked as a banker from 1966 to 1982. In 1982, Mack was elected to the United States House of Representatives. He was reelected in 1984 and 1986. Mack won his first election to the U.S. Senate in 1988. He took office in 1989. He was reelected in 1994. Mack retired when his term ended in January 2001.
