Roberts, Pat

Charles Patrick Roberts was born in Topeka, Kansas, on April 20, 1936. He earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism from Kansas State University in 1958. From 1958 to 1962, he served in the United States Marine Corps, retiring with the rank of captain. From 1962 to 1967, he was a reporter and editor for newspapers in Arizona.

Roberts worked as a congressional aide from 1967 to 1980. In 1980, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, where he served from 1981 to 1997. Roberts played a key role in farm legislation during his service in the House. In 1996, he was elected to his first term in the U.S. Senate. He took office in 1997. Roberts was reelected to the Senate in 2002, 2008, and 2014. In the Senate, Roberts served as chairman of the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition, and Forestry. In January 2019, Roberts announced that he would retire at the end of his current term. He did not seek reelection in 2020.
