Brock, Lou

Brock, Lou (1939-2020), was one of the greatest base stealers in major league baseball history. Brock stole 938 bases during his career, a National League record. Only Rickey Henderson stole more bases during his career. Brock also set the National League record for most stolen bases during a season when he stole 118 in 1974. Brock’s speed helped him lead the National League in doubles and triples in 1968 and in runs scored in 1967 and 1971.

Louis Clark Brock was born on June 18, 1939, in El Dorado, Arkansas. An outfielder, Brock played baseball while attending the University of Southern California and signed with the Chicago Cubs in 1961. He became a regular with the Cubs in 1962 and was traded to the St. Louis Cardinals during the 1964 season. Brock played in three World Series with the Cardinals, stealing 14 bases, a Series record. He batted .464 in the 1968 Series. Brock retired after the 1979 season. He was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1985. Brock died on Sept. 6, 2020.
