Grove, Lefty (1900-1975), was one of the greatest pitchers in baseball history. Grove won 300 games while pitching for the Philadelphia Athletics and Boston Red Sox of the American League. Grove was known for his blazing fast ball and led the league in strikeouts seven consecutive years from 1925, his first year in the major leagues, to 1931. Grove led the league in earned run average a record nine seasons and in wins four seasons, including 31 wins in 1931. He was named the American League Most Valuable Player in 1931.
Robert Moses Grove was born in Lonaconing, Maryland. He began his baseball career as a minor league pitcher. He pitched for Philadelphia from 1925 to 1933, when his contract was sold to Boston. Grove was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1947.
