Seaver, Tom

Seaver, Tom (1944-2020), was a professional baseball player. A dominant right-handed pitcher, Seaver starred mostly for the New York Mets and Cincinnati Reds over 20 Major League Baseball (MLB) seasons from 1967 to 1986. Seaver won the Cy Young Award as the best pitcher in the National League (NL) in 1969, 1973, and 1975. He led the NL in strikeouts five times and had five 20-win seasons. He finished his career with 311 wins, 3,640 strikeouts, and 61 shutouts. A 12-time All-Star, Seaver was elected to the National Baseball Hall of Fame in 1992.

George Thomas Seaver was born in Fresno , California , on Nov. 17, 1944. He pitched for Fresno City College and the University of Southern California before being signed by the Mets in 1966. After pitching in the minor leagues , Seaver joined the Mets in 1967 and was named NL Rookie of the Year. Seaver was traded to the Reds during the 1977 season and threw a no-hitter in 1978. He was traded back to the Mets in 1982 and won his 300th game as a member of the Chicago White Sox in 1985. Seaver pitched his final MLB games for the Boston Red Sox in 1986.

Seaver was known as a keen student of pitching and a perfectionist who studied the strengths and weaknesses of opposing batters. He wrote The Art of Pitching (1984) and a novel about baseball called Beanball (1989), and co-wrote several other works related to baseball. After his retirement from pitching, Seaver worked as a baseball commentator on television for several years. Seaver died on Aug. 31, 2020.
