Burgh was an administrative area in Scotland. It was the equivalent of the English borough. Certain burghs incorporated by royal charter were called royal burghs. Some of the burghs, called parliamentary burghs, elected their own members of Parliament. All other burghs that had populations of 7,000 or more were called police burghs. Burghs were abolished in 1975, when Scotland’s local government was reorganized into larger areas.
