Carey, William Walter (1761-1834), an English religious leader, was one of the first Baptist missionaries. He was also a founder of the Baptist Missionary Society. Carey went to India as a missionary in 1793. In 1799, he and other missionaries established a mission at Serampore, near Calcutta (now Kolkata). In 1801, Carey became a professor of Sanskrit, Bengali, and Marathi at Fort William College, Calcutta. He published translations from the Bible in more than 30 languages and dialects. He also compiled dictionaries and works on grammar. Carey was born in the county of Northamptonshire, England, on Aug. 17, 1761. He worked as a shoemaker until he became a Baptist in 1779. Carey died in India on June 9, 1834.
