Chichester (pop. 124,068) is a cathedral city in West Sussex, England. The city lies at the head of a sheltered sea inlet, which is a popular sailing center. It has an open-air theater, where a drama festival is held annually. The city has many Roman remains, including an amphitheater and a palace. Chichester Cathedral was begun in Norman times. It is unusual in having a bell tower separate from the main building. In Roman times, Chichester was called Noviomagus. The district around Chichester is rural and agricultural. It includes the towns of Midhurst and Petworth. Goodwood has a race course.
