Guinness, Sir Benjamin Lee (1798-1868), was an Irish brewer and philanthropist. He developed the brewery founded by his grandfather in Dublin, Republic of Ireland, in 1759 into one of the world’s largest. He made the Guinness brand of stout famous. He was born in Dublin. He became the first lord mayor of Dublin in 1851. During the 1860’s, he supervised and financed the restoration of St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin.
