Queen Maud Mountains are a range of rugged mountains in Antarctica. The range is part of the Transantarctic Mountains that cross the entire continent. The Queen Maud Mountains extend 500 miles (800 kilometers) southeastward from the Ross Ice Shelf to the edge of the South Polar Plateau. The region has extensive coal reserves. There are many glaciers and some of the peaks in the range exceed 13,000 feet (4,000 meters) in height. The Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen discovered the mountains in 1911 and named them after Queen Maud of Norway, the wife of King Haakon VII.
