Vegemite is a concentrated yeast extract that has become a popular food product in Australia. People use Vegemite as a spread on bread, crackers, and other foods. It is rich in vitamin B and certain amino acids. It has been estimated that Vegemite is now used in more than 90 percent of Australian homes.
Vegemite was developed in 1922 by Cyril Callister, a chemist working for Kraft Foods in Australia. Callister’s invention came in response to the desire of the company’s founder, Fred Walker, to market a product rich in the newly recognized vitamin B. The company produced an initial batch of 4,320 jars and held a competition to find a name for the product. Vegemite was selected as the winner. Vegemite is now sold in Australia, the United Kingdom, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, and the United States.
