Majuro, << mah JUR oh >> (pop. 23,676), is the capital of the Marshall Islands, a nation in the western Pacific Ocean. Majuro is an atoll—a ring-shaped group of islands that surrounds a lagoon. Majuro consists of a ring of about 60 small islands. Most of the islands are joined by landfill. About half the population of the Marshall Islands lives in Majuro.
Many of the people of Majuro work for the government of the Marshall Islands. Tourism is an important industry, and the atoll has a number of hotels and restaurants. Majuro International Airport serves the community.
