Port-Vila

Port-Vila, << pawrt VEE lah >> (pop. 33,700), is the capital of Vanuatu, an island nation in the South Pacific Ocean. It is also the nation’s largest urban community and chief port. Port-Vila, also known as Vila, lies on the southwest coast of the island of Efate.

Port-Vila has a number of cultural institutions. The Cultural Centre and National Museum of Vanuatu houses exhibits of art and artifacts from Vanuatu and other Pacific Islands. The National Library is in the center of the city. A campus of the University of the South Pacific is also in Port-Vila.

Most of the people of Port-Vila work for the government or the tourist industry. Nearby Bauerfield International Airport serves the town.
