Gutierrez, Luis Vincente

Gutierrez, Luis Vincente, << goo TYEHR rehs, loo EES vihn SEHN tay >> (1953-…), was a member of the United States House of Representatives from 1993 to 2019. An Illinois Democrat, he gained a position as a leading spokesman for Hispanic Americans and for the rights of legal immigrants. He was a long-time chairman of the Immigration Task Force of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus.

Gutierrez was born in Chicago on Dec. 10, 1953. He graduated from Northeastern Illinois University in 1976. He worked as a teacher, social worker, community activist, and city official before his election as a Chicago alderman in 1986. He served on the Chicago City Council from 1986 to 1993.

In 1992, Gutierrez won election to his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives. He took office in 1993. He won reelection to the House every two years from 1994 to 2016. Gutierrez did not seek reelection in 2018.
