Largent, Steve

Largent, Steve (1954-…), served in the United States House of Representatives from 1994 to 2002. Largent, a Republican who represented a district in Oklahoma, was known as a leading conservative in Congress. He resigned from the House in February 2002 to run for the office of governor of Oklahoma. However, he was defeated in the election in November of that year.

Stephen Michael Largent was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, on Sept. 28, 1954. He attended the University of Tulsa and was a star wide receiver on the Tulsa football team. After graduating in 1976, he joined the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League (NFL), where he played until 1989. His 819 career pass receptions rank among the highest in NFL history. In 1995, Largent was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Largent won election to his first term in the U.S. House of Representatives in 1994. He took office that same year. Largent replaced James M. Inhofe, who had resigned from the House before the end of his term to take a seat in the U.S. Senate. Largent won reelection to the House in 1996, 1998, and 2000.
