Hang Seng Index (HSI) is a number that measures the rise and fall of stock prices on the Hong Kong stock market. HSI Services Limited, a division of Hang Seng Bank, compiles and manages the HSI.
The HSI traces the day-to-day price movement of 33 stocks that are representative of the Hong Kong stock market. These stocks account for over 70 percent of the market’s capitalization (estimated value). The HSI chooses stocks from four different sectors (areas) of the Hong Kong stock market. The 33 companies on the index represent the finance sector, the utilities sector, the properties sector, and the commerce and industries sector.
The HSI is only one of several Hong Kong stock indexes in the Hang Seng family of indexes. The Hang Seng 100 tracks the top 100 companies on the Hong Kong stock market. The New MidCap 50 Index measures the prices of the 50 stocks ranked after the Hang Seng 100. The Hang Seng China-Affiliated Corporations Index and the Hang Seng China Enterprises Index reflect the performance of companies associated with mainland China. The Hang Seng IT Index Series tracks the growing information technology sector of the Hong Kong stock market.
