Singapore Exchange is one of the largest stock markets in Asia. Traders on the Singapore Exchange can buy and sell shares in companies located in Singapore and other areas of Southeast Asia. Exchange participants trade stocks over a computer network, instead of on a trading floor.
In 1973, a government finance organization called the Monetary Authority of Singapore created the Stock Exchange of Singapore (SES). This stock exchange became one of the world’s first computerized exchanges in 1989. In 1999, the SES merged with the Singapore International Monetary Exchange (SIMEX) to form the Singapore Exchange. SIMEX was a futures exchange, a market where traders can buy and sell contracts to deliver goods by a certain date at a specified price. The Singapore Exchange was one of the first stock exchanges to offer a combined market for both stocks and futures trading.
