Adelphi University is a private institution of higher education in Garden City, New York. It was established as Adelphi College in Brooklyn in 1896, before Brooklyn became part of New York City. Classes began in a building that also housed a boys’ preparatory school called Adelphi Academy. The college moved to Garden City on Long Island in 1929. Adelphi was originally coeducational but served as a women’s college from 1912 to 1945, when it again admitted men to accommodate veterans returning from World War II. Adelphi became a university in 1963.
