Alfred University is a private, independent institution of higher learning in Alfred, New York. Seventh Day Baptists established it as the Alfred Select School in 1836. The school was the first coeducational college in New York state and the second in the United States, after Oberlin College in Ohio. In 1857, the Alfred Select School became Alfred University. Both the university and the town are believed to have been named for Alfred the Great, an English king in the late 800’s who led a revival of learning and literature. Alfred University is the home of the New York State College of Ceramics, a state-supported institution.
