American University

American University is a private, independent institution of higher learning in Washington, D.C. The university was chartered in 1893 by an act of the United States Congress. It was founded with the guidance of the United Methodist Church. When the university opened in 1914, it only offered a graduate program. Courses for undergraduates were added in 1925.

Centers and institutes at American University include the Center for Congressional and Presidential Studies, the Center for Global Peace, and the Intercultural Management Institute. The university’s athletic teams are called the Eagles.
