Ball State University

Ball State University is a public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Muncie, Indiana. It was founded in 1918 when the Balls, a Muncie family who had become wealthy manufacturing Ball canning jars, bought the campus of the Muncie National Institute. The Balls donated the land and buildings to the state of Indiana. The school was then named the Eastern Division of the Indiana State Normal School in Terre Haute. In 1922, the school’s name was changed to Ball Teachers College, Eastern Division of the Indiana State Normal School. In 1929, it was shortened to simply Ball State Teachers College. In 1965, the school became Ball State University.

The school’s sports teams are nicknamed the Cardinals. Well-known graduates of Ball State University include cartoonist Jim Davis and television entertainer David Letterman.
