Bucknell University is a private educational institution in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania. It was founded in 1846 by Baptists as the University at Lewisburg. In 1886, it was renamed Bucknell University after William Bucknell, a wealthy Philadelphian who had helped support the university during the depression that followed the American Civil War (1861-1865). The institution was established as a liberal arts school, but today it offers other professional programs in addition to a liberal arts curriculum. Bucknell’s sports teams are nicknamed the Bison. Well-known Bucknell graduates include baseball great Christy Mathewson and author Philip Roth.
