Carleton College

Carleton College is a privately supported liberal arts college in Northfield, Minnesota. The school was founded in 1866, under the name Northfield College, by the Minnesota Conference of Congregational Churches. In 1871, the school was renamed in honor of William Carleton, who had donated money to the struggling institution. The Congregational churches provided significant support and guidance to the college throughout its early years. Although Carleton College is now independent and nondenominational, it maintains ties with the United Church of Christ. Notable alumni of Carleton College have included novelist Jane Hamilton, United States. Secretary of Defense Melvin R. Laird, and economist Thorstein Veblen.
