Carnegie Mellon University

Carnegie Mellon University is a private, coeducational research institution in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was founded as Carnegie Technical Schools in 1900 by steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie intended the institution to be a vocational training school for the sons and daughters of Pittsburgh’s working class. The school was renamed Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1912. In 1967, it merged with the Mellon Institute to form Carnegie Mellon University.

Carnegie Mellon University is known for its programs in engineering. Carnegie Mellon University also operates art galleries, theaters, and concert halls. The school has a noted symphony orchestra made up of students, the Carnegie Mellon Philharmonic. Carnegie Mellon has formed educational and research partnerships with several international universities. The school has a campus in Qatar.
