Claremont McKenna College

Claremont McKenna College is a private, independent liberal arts college in Claremont, California, near Los Angeles. It is one of the five undergraduate colleges that make up the Claremont Colleges, also called the Claremont Consortium. The other colleges are Harvey Mudd College, Pitzer College, Pomona College, and Scripps College. The Claremont Colleges group also includes two graduate institutions: the Claremont Graduate University and Keck Graduate Institute of Applied Life Sciences. Students may take courses and use facilities at any of the seven schools without additional cost.

Claremont McKenna was founded in 1946 as Claremont Men’s College. Led by founding President George C. S. Benson, the student body was made up primarily of World War II (1939-1945) veterans attending college on the GI Bill. Claremont McKenna, now a coeducational college, emphasizes preparing students for careers in business, government, and the professions. Well-known alumni of Claremont McKenna include Representative David Dreier of California, actor Robin Williams, film director Paul Brickman, and investment bankers Henry R. Kravis and George R. Roberts, founders of Kohlberg, Kravis, Roberts, and Company.
